In addition to our holistic education approach, we offer secondary activities that challenge our children interest in technology, sports, arts, carpentry and cooking. Recently, we have established our Soccer competitive club, Windsor United Soccer Club to be prepared for the city-wide competitive soccer tournament for 2019-2020 soccer league season.

Basketball

We have many casual basketball sessions performed under supervision of Dr. Anas Labak, a former prominent player in Ithad Syrian Team.

We have also, the in-house Basketball League at Al-Hijra Mosque Gym among different youth teams in the city and teams formed from the participants.

Community Service Projects

In order to encourage our children to become active members of their community and have a lasting, positive impact on society, our Kashafah carried out a community service project, in which more than 200 lunch meals were prepared and distributed for less fortunate people who attended the foodbank at the downtown city of Windsor.

The goal was to expose our children to people who are at a disadvantage and allow them to realize they can make a difference and gave them the tools to do so. Lastly, we wanted to develop their awareness and better their understanding of the communities they live in.

The specific community project was decided in partnership with Al-Hijra Mosque and the downtown mission, a local food bank. The children fundraised the money through a bake sale during the Sahabah Arabic School on Sunday January 28, 2019 to buy supplies to make lunches for the people who attend this foodbank.

The children then picked a suitable day, Saturday February 2nd, 2019 to handout these lunches to less fortunate individuals.

Arts & Crafts

Many arts and crafts projects were made at our Kashafah’ programs to encourage our students to embrace their artistic side.

Among them, building girls handbag, penholders, water bottle dolls, cards for parents, and much more.

Carpentry work

Our Kashafah executed many carpentry projects during their activities time. Our main goal is to allow our children learn new skills that benefit them in daily life. Also, to build some beneficial items to be used in the program and/or in the Masjid.

Among the items built by our Kashafah during their carpentry projects time included the dry erase board, folding tables, chair carts for the masjid to store the event chairs on.

Canoeing

One of the highlights of our camping trip is spending hours on the lake canoeing and racing each other down the river. Our Kashafah took every opportunity to get down to the lake to enjoy canoeing with their friends.

Our canoeing activity allowed students to learn a new activity as well as enjoy their time within nature.

Archery

Our Kashafah’ aim was put to the test with the archery activity. Kashafah leaders taught our kashafah the safety and rules when dealing with the bow and arrow and let them take the lead.

After lots of practice, some of our Kashafah were able to score a bullseye and gained a new skill!

Swimming

We rent the Adie Knox Herman Arena swimming pool for separate boys and girls swimming events twice a year, one in summer and one in winter.
Parents and children enjoy the events and are always looking forward to them.

Robotics

Our robotics team, WinMARS was established on 2018 and participated in first LEGO LEAGUE, Windsor at St. Clair College.

Despite its newly born, and first participation, our team achieved the 10th place among 27 participant teams and surpassed many older teams in the competition.

We are looking forward to meeting new members in our robotics team from our Kashafah’ participants in 2018- 2019 programs

Arduino Project

The remote-controlled Arduino car project was a very fun and beneficial project done with our children in the summer camp of 2018.

We had them working together and improving their teamwork skills. The students learned about programming an Arduino Microcontroller through the Arduino IDE (Arduino Environment) which is a subset of the C++ programming language.

They also got to learn about the different sensors used in some autonomous vehicles such as an Ultrasonic Sensors and Color Sensors.

This course was taught by a professional developer with a master’s degree in engineering. This course gave the children opportunities to explore new career and paths. Like all of our other courses, this course was interactive and filled with fun and benefits.

Leadership workshop

Our leadership workshop in summer 2018 aimed to build better youth Muslim leaders and help the community.

We stressed on the main qualities of the youth leaders, as honesty & Integrity, ability to inspire others, commitment & passion, good communication, decision-making capabilities, accountability, delegation & empowerment and creativity & Innovation.

After completion the workshop, our participants planned for the first community project to be executed in Winter 2019.

Wildlife exploring

We believe it is crucial for our Kashafah to be in-tune with the environment around them and be connected to nature. Wildlife exploring is an activity that allowed this.

The Kashafah went through the forest with mentors and identified different animals, plants and objects in nature. The Kashafah were taught survival skills and how to deal with the wildlife.

Natural trails hiking

Morning hiking trips were taken daily during the camping trip after fajr prayer and azthkar. Along the hiking, you could hear our Kashafah chanting “Bismillah, Alhamdulillah, Laillaha Illa Allah, Allahu akbar” all throughout the forest.

We might have scared away some animals…but not the people, because we were the only campers at that time in the 74 acres camping site.

Camp fire stories

A camping trip isn’t complete without a campfire and a beautiful gathering around it. Around our campfire, our Kashafah ate marshmallows as they shared stories and were told stories by Kashafah leaders and community elders about the prophets, companions and role-models.

The Kashafah also learned some great life-lessons at the time around the camp-fire.

Scavenger hunt

Nothing is more exciting than a nature scavenger hunt in the forest. To get the Kashafah familiar with their surroundings, we broke them up into teams and had a competition with who could find the most items on the list given to them.

The campground was chaos for a while with teams scrambling to find items on their list and win.

Horseback riding classes

Have you ever ridden a horse before? Our Kashafah never ridden a horse before last year. Last year we went to Cidermill Horseback Riding School and Equine Farm, where our children learnt a lot about horsemanship and how to ride a horse.

In a long introductory course that extended from fall 2017 until Spring 2018, our children taught how to take care of horses, ride them and get along together. It was a nice experience and we are looking forward repeating it this year as well.
